Rosa Merckx turned 90
First female Belgian brewmaster
10 / 2014
In a time when only men brewed beer, she was the only woman you would find in the brewing hall. Rosa started out as a secretary, and slowly but surely she mastered the craft of brewing and became the brewmaster of Brewery Liefmans. Decades she was responsible for the quality control and production of the Liefmans beers.
Madame Rose has become an icon in the world of beer. People speak of her with the greatest respect and admiration. But she hasn’t changed and is still very humble and down to earth. Sometimes she even gets annoyed by how everyone keeps making a big fuss about her.
"I was the first brewster, but one without a formal brewing education. I’ve been thrown in the water like a dog you wanna learn how to swim. And I learned how to swim." - Rosa Merckx
This year she turned 90. Don’t be fooled by her age, Rosa is very much alive and kicking. Full of energy, this strong lady is still very driven and passionate to make sure that the brewery produces beers of high quality.
For her dedication she received the honorary medal of Officer in the Order of the Crown.
‘Never listen to what men say, just watch as they do". A card with this quote lay on my pillow one time in my hotel room. It still hangs above my bed.
